Course: Embedded Systems

Position in the timetable: F4, optional

Hours per week: 2 plus 1 in the laboratory

Examination: Report or test

Aim: This course is an introduction in embedded systems design using microcontrollers. The system approach requires a unified view of software and hardware, seeing them not as completely different domains, but rather as two implementation options. The course focuses on design principles supported by examples with the 83C552 microcontrollers. Since the need for knowledge of interfacing is increasing, the material describes serial interfaces such as I2C bus and CAN bus.

Contents:

1. Introduction. Taxonomy. Basic parameters.

2. General-purpose processors. Specialised processors. Microcontrollers.

3. The 83C552 microcontroller. Architecture. Memory organization. Embedded subsystems. Interaction between the processor and the subsystems.

4. Assembly language programming for the 83C552 microcontroller. Addressing modes. Assemblers and linkers.

5. Digital interfacing for embedded systems. Memory design. Parallel interface. Serial interface. Interfacing LED and LCD displays. Single-board computer.

6. Analog interfacing. The 83C552 microcontroller analog subsystems.

7. Interfacing personal computers. Programming the 83C552 microcontroller serial port. Programming the PC serial ports. Interface USB.

8. High-performance microcontrollers. Low-power microcontrollers. RISC microcontrollers.

9. Serial interfaces for distributed embedded systems. Interface I2C. Interface CAN. CAN microcontrollers.

10. High-level languages for microcontrollers. C compilers for the 83C552 microcontroller.

11. Embedded systems design. Design methods. Development tools.

12. Hardware-software co-design. Design phases. Design tools.
